One of the most common complaints seen at the Foot & Ankle Centers: Plantar Fasciitis, one cause of heel pain.  Plantar Fasciitis is an inflammation of the band of tissue (the plantar fascia) that extends from the heel to the toes.  The fascia first becomes irritated and then inflamed, resulting in heel pain.  Symptoms include:  pain on the bottom of the heel, pain that is usually worse when you stand up and pain that increases over a period of months.  After a few minutes of walking, the pain can decrease, because walking stretches the fascia.  For some, the pain may subside but returns after spending long periods of time on their feet.

Issues contributing to Plantar Fasciitis include: faulty structure of the foot (overly flat or high-arched feet), non-supportive footwear and obesity.  Also, during weight-bearing athletics such as running or extended periods of standing, the plantar fascia can be overused, causing small, repetitive tears in the fibers that make up the fascia.  The swelling and inflammation that result can be extremely painful.  Following examination and diagnosis, treatments include: losing weight, icing, stretching and strengthening exercises, rest, injection therapy, orthotics, splints, removable walking cast, physical therapy, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and PRP (Platelet Rich Protein) injections.  The PRP procedure uses the patient’s own tissue and cells (at a concentration about nine times higher than the body normally produces) to accelerate healing, and it’s done in the comfort of our office.  Please check with your doctor or podiatrist before starting any exercise routine.

Diagnosis and treatment of the underlying causes are essential to obtaining good foot health.  And for that, we are here to help.  Our doctors are all fellows of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons which means they are board-certified.  So, give us a call to locate our nearest office and an appointment convenient for you.  At the Foot & Ankle Centers:
